By the time you reach the interview stage, any job may sound like the “right” job. You’ve made finding a new job your full-time occupation for weeks or months, and a promising interview offers the “boost” most job-seekers need to say “Yes!”, especially when the interview is followed by the first offer you’ve had in a long while.

But just because the job is available doesn’t mean it’s the right one for you. And when you take a job that isn’t the right fit, you set yourself up for disappointment, a stalled career, or an all-too-early return to the job hunt.

How can you identify the jobs that are the right fit? Here are some signs that it’s time to look elsewhere:

  1. The company’s recent media coverage or public persona leaves you cold. Hop online to check out the company’s social media sites, any recent media coverage, and the ways the company presents itself publicly on its website, blog, or other marketing and public materials. Does this sound like a place you’d be proud to claim as your employer? If not, the job may not be the right fit for you.
  2. The employer doesn’t seem to respect your time. Employers that drag out the interviewing process, leave you in the dark about important decision-making timeframes, or reschedule your interview multiple times aren’t likely to respect your time once they’ve hired you, either. Think long and hard about whether a scheduling run-around is something you’re willing to deal with for months or years in your new job.
  3. You can’t imagine yourself working happily in the space or with the people. While visiting the employer, check out the state of people’s workspaces, the lighting, and the general mood. Is this the kind of workspace you prefer? Or is the lighting harsh, the workspace overflowing with unfinished business, and the mood too gloomy – or too cheery – to suit you? The more mental and emotional energy you must spend navigating an ill-fitting environment, the less you have to do your best work. Make sure the company offers a place you’d like to be, not just work you’d like to do.
