When you have identified the right person, don’t waste too much time running him through a corporate gauntlet. Top performers frequently have multiple offers to choose from so make the offer quickly and make it attractive.

Similarly, if you identify an employee that you would like to mentor for management, don’t drag your feet. If they are unchallenged, they will look elsewhere and you will miss your opportunity. Make identifying outstanding employees a priority for all managers and executives.
