You would think that people who excel at marketing for others would be better at marketing themselves, but it’s like the old adage – the cobbler’s children have no shoes. Surprisingly, marketers are just as guilty as other job seekers of making these common resume mistakes.

Not analyzing your target market. As a marketer, you’re an expert at due diligence. When you take on a new project, you dig in to get every bit of information you can uncover to create a tightly targeted campaign. Why not do the same when it comes to your job search? Break down the job description and research the company in depth before you draft your resume.

Not customizing each resume. Years ago, job seekers typed out resumes and took them to the copy shop or printer to have them printed by the hundreds. It made sense then, to create one generic resume that would work in most circumstances. And that’s what employers expected. Today, that is no longer the case. Every resume should be individually targeted to the job you are interested in. Highlight the skills and experience that most closely match the traits of the ideal candidate for the position.

Not relating your experience to the qualifications. Your resume should not be a treasure hunt. Most hiring managers have mere moments to scan your resume before deciding whether to place it in the keep or toss pile. Use the same terminology as they do and tell your story to present yourself as a desirable product.

Keyword stuffing. Sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. As a marketer, chances are you know your resume will be computer scanned before it ever makes it into the hands of a human. But if you gear your resume toward the computer program by loading it up with terms like medical device marketing, market launch, commercialization, go-to-market strategies, it will look like gibberish by the time an actual decision maker looks at it.
