With 2015 drawing to a close and the market for top talent looking even tighter in 2016, sales and marketing departments are scrambling to get the recruitment process right.

To make your 2016 recruiting strategy the most effective yet, try these tactics:

Look Back

To plan ahead, look at the past. Review your recruiting strategy for the previous year, along with the progress of the employees you hired under last year’s recruiting plan. Ask:

  • What were the major challenges we faced this past year?
  • What parts of the plan worked better than expected?
  • How well are our new hires doing?
  • If I could change one thing about last year’s recruiting plan, what would it be?

Make notes of your answers to each question as you work through them. Share these notes with your staffing partner for specific guidance and feedback.

Look Here

Once you have a clear view of how well 2015’s recruiting strategy worked (or didn’t), it’s time to take a look at your goals for the coming year. Some questions to ask at this stage include:

  • What are your department’s or business’s overall goals for the coming year?
  • What skills and abilities will staff need to have to meet those goals? Do you have people with these traits? If not, how can you include them on the team?
  • Where haven’t you looked for new talent: job fairs, LinkedIn, conferences, with a staffing partner?
  • Who do you currently have on your team that is willing to learn new skills? Who can likely recommend other promising candidates?

Look Ahead

Start with your goals for the coming year and work backwards to create your recruitment and staffing plan. For instance, if the goal is to increase B2B sales of a certain product by 10 percent, who will you need to add to the team to accomplish this task? What skills and experience will they need? Where will you look for them?

Don’t hesitate to talk to your staffing partner as you work. Staffing firms have extensive experience tailoring recruitment strategies and staffing plans to the needs of their individual clients.
