Interviewing for a marketing job interview is your chance to show your recruiter or potential employer that you are the right person for the job. The foundation of a successful job interview is adequate preparation and research, covering topics from the employer’s history, to preparing portfolio pieces that show off your experience and potential.

As you prepare for your upcoming marketing job interview, here are eight tips to follow:

Check out the employer’s digital footprint.

While you’re researching the company, examine their digital presence.  Determine which sites they do (and don’t) have a presence on and what type of content they share.  This will help you gauge their current marketing and suggest ways to improve.

Prepare for common marketing interview questions.

“Tell us about a successful marketing project you’ve done.”

“What was your most recent successful sale or presentation?”

“Pretend I’m a customer.  Describe the benefits of one of our products to me.”

These interview questions come up often in marketing interviews, and they ask you to express your marketing skills.  Be ready for them.

Tell stories.

In all your interview answers, don’t just list facts.  Weave them into a story that explains what you did, how it succeeded, and why the company needs you on its side.  In other words, market yourself!

Focus on your accomplishments.

Many candidates will list past job duties that line up with the current job’s posting and application, thinking this will demonstrate their skill.  Go one step further by talking about major past accomplishments that used the skills this employer is looking for. They’ll know you can succeed, because you already have.

Bring ideas.

Marketing thrives on fresh ideas.  Learn about the company’s current approach, industry, and goals so you can come with two or three ideas for future projects or campaigns.  Even if the ideas don’t pan out, you’ll demonstrate your passion and initiative.

Show off your portfolio.

If you have a portfolio, bring it to the interview, even if it doesn’t seem entirely relevant to the job you’re applying for.  You can use it to underline your strongest skills: “Although not all of this is relevant to the job I’m applying for, I wanted you to see that when I’m given a direction, I run with it.”

Practice.

Work with a friend or colleague you trust to practice delivering your interview answers.  Focus on giving the interviewer your undivided attention – when you are speaking and when you are listening.

Be ready to go the night before.

Reduce your interview-day stress by making your morning as easy as possible.  Lay out the clothes you’re going to wear, put your portfolio, keys, and wallet in a convenient spot near the door, and decide what you’re going to eat for breakfast.  Even a simple energy bar will help you do your best.
