Biotech is a burgeoning field – responsible for dozens of scientific breakthroughs and saving or improving thousands of lives each year.  The field also provides a multitude of opportunities for sales professionals looking to expand their careers and sharpen their skills.

Here are five ways to find your dream job in biotech sales:

  1. Learn about the field. Biotech is a highly specialized field, and is constantly changing. Start by learning all you can about the industry: its key players, their major (and minor) products, and how they’ve made the news in recent years.  This information will help you focus on the companies that offer you the best fit.
  2. Take a class (or several). Biotech sales representatives need a working understanding of the life sciences in addition to a passion for learning about new products, devices and processes. If your background in the sciences is rusty, sign up for a class or two at a local college.  You’ll demonstrate a passion for learning as well as an interest in the field.
  3. Rotate your search. Instead of hitting the same job boards over and over, set up your week to rotate your search for a biotech sales job. For example, Monday look at your current job boards and listings; Tuesday check out a new periodical or job board; and Wednesday meet with a member of your professional network to touch base.
  4. Use what you have. If you’ve worked in sales but haven’t “broken into” biotech yet, review your past work for your most relevant skills and accomplishments. Make these the backbone of your application materials for biotech sales jobs.
  5. Work with a recruiter. Choose a staffing firm that specializes in placing sales professionals in the biotech industry. When you do, you’re more likely to find a recruiter who knows the industry well and can help you position yourself to find your dream job.
