When it comes to finding the people you need, you can continue looking in the same old places – or you can start cultivating a relationship with new prospects in the biotech industry. To meet the newest “rising stars” or find new talent, here’s how to build rapport with your prospects:

  1. Expand your “comfort zone.” Start by finding out where else the best candidates in biotech are looking for work. Your staffing partner can help you connect with job boards, fairs and other tools – including tools you already have, such as your organization’s applicant tracking system or the professional networks of your current top performers.
  2. Practice building rapport early. As every experienced salesperson knows, you have a very short window in which to get past the “no, thanks” reflex. Start before you even reach out to a new candidate by finding something you have in common, and mention it when you introduce yourself. Then, let the candidate talk – even if you get an initial “no.” By hearing them out instead of cutting them off, you’ll establish that you’re on their side, which can open avenues for further communication.
  3. Ask questions before you make your pitch. Many new prospects for biotech hiring are “passive candidates.” In other words, they’re not looking for new jobs, but they will accept a position with the right company if one becomes available. Although asking questions first is essential when talking to any candidate, it is particularly important when talking to passive candidates, because passive candidates have no motivation to sell themselves to you. By asking questions, you demonstrate you are also interested in what you can do to improve their work life – which is precisely what the passive candidate is seeking.
  4. Listening is an underrated skill in the business world, but it is an essential one for building rapport with new prospects. Ask questions, and listen to the answers. Let the answers suggest the next question or the next area of discussion.
