You’ve survived the interview and were offered a job.  Congratulations!  Now it’s time to answer the toughest question yet: Is this pharmaceutical marketing position right for you?

Here are six tips for taking a 360-degree view of the job offer in order to make sure you can thrive in this position.

  1. Look at the entire compensation package first. Your salary number matters, but it’s not the only way you’re being paid for your work. Evaluate things like healthcare, retirement, vacation, and flextime or telecommuting options.  Make sure health insurance works for your needs – medical costs can take a big bite out of your salary if your health insurance is inadequate.
  2. Add up the hidden costs. How long is your commute, and what will transportation cost? Will you need to upgrade your wardrobe?  Are you expected to spend time – and money – on dinners or other outings with co-workers?  Estimate how much it will cost you to do the job, and factor this in when you look at salary and benefits.
  3. Consider the salary. Once you’ve looked at some of the other aspects of the job offer, think about the salary number. Do some math to determine what your take-home pay will be after taxes.  Are you comfortable with this number?  Is it competitive in the field, for employers of this size and for professionals with your level of experience?  Your recruiter can help you make sure you’re being paid competitively.
  4. What’s your comfort level with the workplace? Think back to your interview. What was your comfort level in the office itself?  Was it clean, organized, well-lit, comfortable?  How did people treat one another?  Was the noise level acceptable?  A bad workspace will kill your productivity and your focus, so make sure you’re choosing a place you can feel comfortable in every day.
  5. Review the day-to-day job demands. Check the job description and the offer paperwork to make sure you understand what you’re being asked to do in this role. If you have any questions, get them answered before you say yes.  One of the biggest reasons people find themselves back on the job market after taking an offer is that they end up being asked to do a different job than the one they thought they were hired to do.
  6. Double-check on important details. Do you need to leave no later than 6 p.m. to pick up your children from daycare or after-school activities? Is it imperative that you have an office with a door so you can concentrate?  Do you need help paying moving bills to relocate for this job?  Make sure the details are in the job offer, so there are no questions once you start work.
