The late-winter doldrums can cause staff to “check out.” Even if they’re present, your team may not be focused or engaged.

If productivity is lagging and you suspect a lack of engagement is to blame, here’s how you can help you staff “check in” again:

Show them you believe in them.

It’s easy for staff to stop believing in their own work if they feel that no one else believes in it either.  Start by asking your staff about their work. Do they find it meaningful? If not, did they find it meaningful in the past? What changed? Why did they choose sales or marketing as a career in the first place? What would help them regain that old “spark”?

Collect their answers and look for patterns. You may spot a problem that can be easily fixed, to the benefit of everyone on your team. Or you may see your staff have already identified a promising new direction for your next campaign – and they’re just waiting for someone to give them the green light.

Find out what’s in it for your staff.

The question “what’s in it for me?” drives all of business, from how you seek candidates to how you build sales and marketing campaigns.  Turn around and ask this question of your staff. What’s in it for each of you?

By doing so, you discover what motivates each member of your team. This is powerful information: It tells you what you can do for each person in order to help them re-engage and supply the team with their particular strengths and insights once again.
