A strong relationship between managers and workers is essential for any sales or marketing department. Managers often juggle so many tasks that taking on the additional work of figuring out how to manage best seems like one more job they cannot allot time to achieve.

Here are five ways to improve your team’s engagement, productivity and ability to work independently:

  1. Push people past mediocrity. Is “good enough” really good enough? When you settle for mediocre, so does your team; they may even feel you don’t care about their work. Improve both engagement and work quality by encouraging your team to do better than “good enough,” beat their own best performance and take pride in the results.
  2. Set clear and concise success goals. Clarify what your team needs to strive for. Provide a clear framework for acceptable and unacceptable ways to go about achieving those results. Then, delegate. Make yourself available to answer questions, but let your team figure out how they’re going to reach the top of Success Mountain. This method helps foster ownership in the work among your team, and it frees them to innovate for success.
  3. Adopt a “fix it” mentality. When a problem arises, focus on fixing it: Get to the root cause and address it to ensure a similar mistake does not happen again in the future. Encourage your team to address problems in the same way. When you push the team to “fix it once, fix it right,” you help them move forward instead of constantly dealing with the same old problems.
  4. Make people feel they’re worthwhile. Nothing destroys employee engagement and productivity faster than making people feel as if their contributions do not matter or are not valued. Reward your staff for success. Even a quick “Thanks for handling this” in an email or a “Congratulations, you did a great job with this account” during a staff meeting goes a long way.
  5. Provide feedback in abundance. Team doing well? Tell them. Team making a mistake? Tell them! The more focused, issue-specific feedback you provide, the more your team understands about what is needed and the better they can perform in the future.
