Sales careers offer several challenges, but they can also cause stress to build up. In today’s interconnected, “work from anywhere” world, sales professionals are at risk of feeling they are always on the clock.

Just because you can work anywhere, at any time, doesn’t mean you should. Prioritizing time and activities to reduce your stress load can help you maximize your productivity by ensuring you balance work and rest. Here’s how:

Track all your time.

Many sales professionals already track their work hours, especially if they’re on the road. For one week, track all your time – not just the time you spend on the job. Record how long you spend sleeping, when you eat, how often and how long you exercise, and how much time you spend on relaxing hobbies like watching TV.

Prioritize the “big three.”

Once you know where your time is going, you can start managing it more effectively. Start by prioritizing the “big three” stress-beaters: sleep, regular meals and exercise. Everything else in your day must accommodate these activities – these activities don’t shift to accommodate other tasks.

Schedule your down time.

Schedule at least an hour a day to “do nothing.” During this time, you might read, watch television, work on a craft or project or simply sit and think for a while. Make this time an active date with yourself. Your “do nothing” time is not unscheduled time; it is time set aside specifically to allow you to recharge, so you can be more productive and creative on the job.

Delegate and sequester.

Technology makes it possible to work from everywhere – so the only boundaries between work and the rest of your life are those you set. Delegate tasks you don’t enjoy and set boundaries on when you will work and when you will do other things. Most importantly, practice saying no to additional work, whether it’s another professional project or a PTO meeting.
