In the second installment of our three-part mini-series on crafting your 2018 sales and marketing staffing plan, we’ll examine what to do with the results of the audit we covered in part one. Here’s how to put that data to use.

Plan Development: Getting Started

Start with a copy of your 2017 staffing plan, as well as the notes and information you gathered while auditing last year’s plan. Then:

Put your goals first.

What are your sales and marketing staffing goals for 2018? How do these align with the goals of the company? Clarify these, put them front and center, and refer to them repeatedly as you draft your staffing plan. These goals help provide focus and direction.

Look at what worked.

Sections of the staffing plan that exceeded your expectations in 2017 can often be retained in the 2018 plan – if they continue to align with the goals of the department and the company. Take a second look at sections that met, but did not exceed your expectations, and consider talking to your staffing partner about ways to improve them.

Then, address what didn’t.

Sections that failed to meet expectations need an overhaul. Here, you’ll need to dig a bit deeper. Consult the results of your audit. What went wrong? What are some possible ways to address it? Generate two or three options for addressing each issue, so you can choose the best one for the organization, as well as for your specific staffing needs.

Need More Information?

As you work, you may discover you have questions or need more information. Here are three potential sources – choose the one that works best for your needs:

  • Internet searches. The internet can provide information on competing companies’ compensation packages, industry trends and more.
  • Employee surveys. A quick online survey can help you see how well new hires are fitting in and what your employees like about their jobs – as well as what they want to see changed in order to boost productivity.
  • Your recruiting partner. Staffing firms specialize in strategic staffing, both in the short and long term. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or bounce ideas off your recruiting partner. Helping you get your 2018 staffing plan right is their job.
