Having trouble finding a new job? Maybe it’s not the economy. You could be getting in your own way. Are you making these five common job search errors that could be preventing you from winning your dream job?

  1. Applying to too many jobs. Are you failing to narrow your search? If you are sending out hundreds of resumes, you could be causing yourself a couple of problems. First, if you are in a smaller community, word can get out and employers will think you don’t know what you want. Second, you are really wasting your own time. Without focus, you won’t be able to concentrate your efforts to network and search within a narrow niche that will get you the best results.
  2. Lacking an online presence. Or worse – having an unprofessional one. Businesses do look candidates up online. Beat them to the punch to be sure your image is squeaky clean. Update LinkedIn regularly so that potential employers can see your achievements. Take a look at your Facebook and Twitter accounts through the eyes of a hiring manager and decide what you should change.
  3. Being careless in resume preparation. Does your resume demonstrate your attention to detail or is it full of typos and misspellings. Is it concise and scannable? Does it list achievements or just job descriptions? Your resume is an advertisement for you. Make sure that it is compelling and does a good job of selling the product – you!
  4. Interviewing poorly. The interview is a hotbed of potential landmines. There are several critical mistakes you can make. Not dressing correctly for the interview. Failing to adequately research the company. Not preparing intelligent questions to ask or having answers and examples ready for common interview questions.
  5. Revealing confidential information. Do you say things on your resume or in interviews that are proprietary to your current or previous employers? Think about the things that you say. You may forget that something is supposed to be confidential, but a hiring manager could wonder if you would do the same with their insider knowledge.
