As a top recruiting firm, SMR Group knows that every hiring manager has a different process when it comes time to interview. However, the goal is always the same – find and hire the best marketing or sales candidate. If you’re not following interview best practices though, you could be undermining your efforts. Rethink your interview process – and boost results – by following the tips below:

Rethink your expectations.

Every hiring manager wants to recruit top talent. However, if you’re looking for the perfect candidate, and overlooking great candidates in the process, then you need to rethink your expectations.

Don’t expect to interview a candidate and find that they have every single attribute you’re after. Instead, before you interview, define 3-5 “must have,” non-negotiable attributes and put the rest on your “nice-to-have” list. Otherwise, you could become too picky and miss out on star talent in your quest for perfection.

Rethink the steps you take.

For most employers, their interview process consists of the same steps they’ve taken in the past. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a productive and effective way to interview. So walk through your interview process. Ask yourself some questions, such as:

  • How are you evaluating candidates?
  • How do you determine if they will succeed in the new role?
  • Are there areas in the process that could be streamlined?
  • What parts of it seem ineffective?

If you can’t define your interview process in 4-6 steps, then it’s either too short and doesn’t vet candidates enough, or so long-winded that candidates get frustrated.

Rethink how you communicate.

Nothing irritates candidates more than not knowing where they stand in the interview process. That’s why it’s so important to make communication a priority.

If you interview a candidate and know they’re not right for you, don’t leave them hanging. Let them know immediately. Likewise, if a decision maker is holding up the process, stay in touch with your top-pick candidates so they don’t feel like they’re in the interview black hole.

Even in today’s economy, the best sales and marketing candidates have choices when it comes to employers. And if they feel neglected or mistreated, they’ll walk away from your opportunity.

Even if your hiring process is effective, it’s always a good idea to take a step back every so often and re-evaluate. When you’re constantly looking to improve how you hire, you’ll only make the experience better for candidates – and produce better results for your company.
