The competition for the best sales and marketing positions is fierce, especially in industries like medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and biotech – places where your job skills must be sharp and your technical knowledge up to date.

During your interview, you want to make a great impression from start to finish.  When you reach the final question, “Do you have any questions for us?” here are six ways to stand out by skipping the clichés and asking thought-provoking questions:

“You mentioned the company offers [growth opportunities].  Based on what you’ve learned about me so far, which of those would you recommend I pursue first?”

This question does two things: it demonstrates that you were paying attention when the hiring manager talked about professional development and growth, and it shows that continual improvement is one of your personal career goals.

“How is success measured in this job?”

The answer will tell you where to focus your efforts if you land the job. It will also tell you how accurate and committed the company is to measuring and rewarding success. If the answer is vague, think twice: a subjective or unclear evaluation system can make it tough to climb the ladder.

“Has anyone ever failed in this job? Why did they fail?”

Knowing how to succeed in a job is key – but so is knowing how not to fail.  By asking this question, you demonstrate you’re willing and able to learn from others’ mistakes before you make them yourself.

“Where do you see this team in five years?”

Take a classic interview question and turn it around to get a better idea of where the team and the company are headed.  If the trajectory is one that excites you, this might be the right job for you.

“What can you tell me about this organization that isn’t widely known?”

When asking questions about the company, never ask questions that can be answered with an online search. This question helps you cut through the public information and demonstrates your interest in knowing more.

“What do you like best about working here?”

Because this question works in any position or industry, it can serve as an excellent “fallback” if none of your other prepared questions seem to fit the bill. Listen carefully to the answer: If the hiring manager describes a place you would like to work, you’ve probably found the right employer for you.
