Medical marketing is a growing field, and the competition for openings with some of the nation’s best employers can be stiff. To land the interview, you’ll need a resumé that stands out from the crowd by highlighting your strengths.

Here are five “best practices” for creating a medical marketing professional resume:

Write to your target.

You would never start a marketing campaign without knowing who your target audience is. Why would you create a resume without knowing the same thing?

Learn all you can about the company, the person who will read your resumé and what’s important to each audience. Consider the type of job you’re applying for, the work you’ll be expected to do and the clients this company is trying to reach. Then, plan accordingly.

Consider your unique value proposition.

Every person applying for this job probably has a similar educational background to yours, has spent a similar number of years in marketing, and has the basic skills to do the job – or they wouldn’t bother to apply. But what makes you different?

First, list the skills and accomplishments you have that make you different. Then, choose one or two that fit this company’s needs and the position, and focus on these in your application.

Create a strategy.

In a marketing campaign, you’d define your messaging strategy before you started creating content. Do the same thing on your resumé. Before you write, consider options for the best structure, keywords, examples and design to get your message across to your target audience.

Speak the computer’s language.

Most companies in the medical device industry use automated applicant tracking systems. You upload your resumé, and the system scans it for keywords. If it finds enough keywords, it forwards your resumé to the hiring manager; if not, your resumé lands in the digital version of the circular file.

Use the job description for keywords. Talk to your recruiter. And don’t forget to mention social media sites, analytics, CRM system, and software by name if you’re proficient in its use.

Keep it short and focused.

Ideally, your resumé will fit on a single page, or no more than two pages if you’re a seasoned professional with a distinguished track record in the field. Use LinkedIn to create a comprehensive look at your career; then put the URL to your LinkedIn profile on your resumé. A hiring manager who wants to see more can take a look, without that information cluttering up your focused, beautifully formatted resumé.
