If you’ve been searching for a new job in biotech marketing with no luck, it may be time to rethink your job search.  Here are six ways to search smarter, not harder and find the job of your dreams:

  1. Rearrange your search week. If your job search is scattered throughout the week, or if you always focus on the same sources, try rearranging your schedule. Find the time you’re most focused during the day and schedule your job search in a four-hour block during this time.  Then, assign each day of the week to a search in a different place.  For instance, you might check the want ads on Monday, skim your recruiter’s job board on Tuesday, call up a professional contact on Wednesday and so on.
  2. Look for new jobs in new places. Expand your job search by finding new sources of biotech marketing jobs. Staffing firm job boards are a great place to start.  Check out the career services offices at local colleges and universities, which frequently have postings for all types of jobs – not just entry-level positions.  And don’t overlook trade journals and websites which frequently offer job listings as part of their services.
  3. Reach out to your professional network. Schedule one day a week to meet up with a member of your professional network, whether you do so in person or over Skype. Talk about the industry, your plans and the types of jobs you’re looking for.  You’ll refresh old network connections and position yourself to receive a lead from an unexpected source.
  4. Embrace temporary opportunities. Temporary and contract positions give you the chance to test drive employers, build rapport, expand your network and update your resume – all while being paid to do so. You’ll also have time to keep searching for the full-time work you want.
  5. Refresh your portfolio by adding your passions. If your resume or portfolio need an update, offer to do marketing work for a charitable cause you’re passionate about. You’ll develop new samples and achievements, and you’ll support a cause that matters to you.
  6. Work with a recruiter. Staffing firms are the resident experts at connecting professionals to the jobs that will further their career goals. For best results, choose a recruiter that specializes in placing marketing professionals in biotech and similar industries.
