The pharmaceutical industry is growing and changing, offering a host of fascinating challenges for marketing professionals. To get your foot in the door with any company, you’ll need a marketing resume and cover letter that stand out from the crowd. Here’s how to create them.

Your Resume

Studies indicate the average hiring manager spends only a few seconds skimming each resume. To catch the hiring manager’s attention, you’ll need to pay careful attention to how your resume is structured.

  • Speak the hiring manager’s language. Use the job posting as a guide to the words and phrases that will get the hiring manager’s attention. Repeat key words and phrases from the job posting in your resume.
  • Focus on accomplishments. Instead of listing your duties in previous positions, list your top two or three accomplishments, using the language in the job description to explain the skills you applied to reach those goals.
  • Get picky about formatting. Font size and style, spacing, bullet points, use of white space: It all matters when you’re trying to draw attention to essential information in your resume. Don’t be afraid to experiment with formatting options and to ask for a second opinion on format.

Your resume is an essential part of your application—but it’s not the best place for certain information. That’s where your cover letter comes in.

Your Cover Letter

Your cover letter works as an “elevator pitch” to the hiring manager. It should be concise, yet tell a story that makes the hiring manager want to contact you for an interview. Here are a few ways to achieve these goals:

  • Use your cover letter to expand on a topic or provide additional information. Did you accomplish a feat you couldn’t fit into a resume bullet point? Did you put it in a bullet point, but feel your resume doesn’t do it justice? Expand on it in your cover letter.
  • Answer the hiring manager’s biggest question. The hiring manager wants to know: “What’s the value for us in hiring this person?” Your cover letter offers an outstanding opportunity to answer this question.
  • Include next steps. Whether that’s an offer to call you or a promise to follow up in a week, make it easy for the hiring manager to do what you want them to do next.
