Congratulations! You’ve been invited to interview for a position in medical marketing. Here is your chance to have a conversation with your interviewer that will showcase your abilities and allow you to learn whether this position is ideal for you.

To make an impact in your interview, keep these six tips in mind:

  1. Practice confidence. A sense of self-awareness of your strengths and areas for improvement can help build your confidence. Focusing on your accomplishments in your interview preparation and practice can also help you see how far you’ve come—and inspire you to share that with the interviewer.
  2. Speak the language. Print out the job description and highlight or circle key words and phrases. Focus on the words the company uses to describe the core skills and traits necessary to the job, as well as the terms they use to describe success. Work these into your answers to demonstrate you’re on the same page.
  3. Tell a story. When preparing interview answers, focus on specific accomplishments that demonstrate certain skills and abilities. When you’re asked to talk about your teamwork or your successes, you can tell a brief story to demonstrate the ways in which you are succeeding in your current
  4. Get your facts straight. If you can quantify an accomplishment, bring specific data to the interview. While stories and descriptions can paint a vivid picture, nothing solidifies your success like facts. Concise, provable sales and marketing data can provide exactly the concrete example or visual aide you need to make your point.
  5. Focus on the “why.” When preparing for your interview, always ask, “Why?” Why do you like marketing? Why do you want to work in medical marketing? Why do you want to work for this specific company? Why do the results you’ve achieved matter? Why are you the best candidate for the job? The hiring manager wants to know why—so be prepared to answer.
  6. Prepare questions. Don’t miss the opportunity an interview provides to have your own questions answered, too. Questions like “What does success look like on this team?”, “What do you expect from marketing team members in the first 30, 60, and 90 days?”, and “What do you like best about working here?” can all help you determine what’s expected and prepare yourself to succeed.
