Would you say that you are a self-aware person? Do you know your strengths and weaknesses? More importantly, can you admit those strengths and weaknesses? And do you know if your perception of yourself aligns with the way others see you? Self-awareness is extremely valuable in a job search. Employers are looking for people who have the sense to know both their talents and their limitations. If you’re on the hunt for a better job, it’s time to get a little more self-aware.

What Is Self-Awareness?

Self-awareness can be defined as the ability to understand how your actions, thoughts and emotions align with your internal standards. Self-aware people are able to evaluate themselves in almost any given situation and align their behavior with their personal values, with an eye for how other people perceive them.

How Can You Become More Self-Aware? (And Why Does it Matter?)

You can become more self-aware by:

  • Asking “what” instead of “why”: If you’re having a rough day at work, your first question might be, “why do I feel so frustrated?” But the answer just leads to more negative feelings. Instead, ask “What are the situations causing me to feel bad?” From there, you can identify factors outside your control and strategize ways to manage them.
  • Spend time with yourself every day: Take 30 minutes a day to spend quiet time with yourself. Self-reflect, read, journal, meditate or practice other solo activities that allow you to connect with who you are.
  • Be mindful: Don’t be reactive, be mindful. Instead of letting one bad interaction or situation derail your emotions, stay present, and focus on how you’re feeling. Acknowledge those feelings but measure your reactions accordingly.
  • Ask for feedback: The best way to understand how others perceive you is to ask them. Start small by asking for feedback on specific work projects or tasks. Enough of this type of feedback can help you start to see how others view you.

By becoming more self-aware in your daily life and at work, you’ll improve interactions with others, and you’ll find that you feel a greater sense of overall satisfaction. By improving your self-awareness, you’ll also become a better job candidate when you’re searching for new opportunities. As a self-aware candidate, you’ll be more likely to apply to jobs that are right for you, and during interviews, you’ll feel more confident answering questions candidly.

Employers value self-awareness because it is a strong sign of emotional intelligence. When you know your strengths and weaknesses, and you have a realistic view of how others perceive you, you will be a much more effective employee and coworker.
