The sun is out, the days are long, and the weather is fine – yet many professionals find that summer brings with it not renewed energy, but a major slump.  

Burnout is an ongoing problem for hardworking, driven professionals. It occurs when our approach to work isn’t sustainable. We put in more energy than we gain from work or recharging activities, tapping into our reserves. Over time, those reserves become depleted – until there’s nothing left to tap. 

Burnout is reversible. Here are some ways to change course during the summer months: 

Schedule “off duty” time and stick to it. 

Make a time each day when you are simply unavailable for phone calls, email, and other demands. Put your phone in “do not disturb” mode and spend this time mentally and physically away from work.  

It’s important not only to create this time, but to defend it. If you’re rushed or overworked, don’t let work eat into your rest time. If someone wants you to work during this time, you can’t – you have an important appointment.  

Set boundaries and say no.  

Summer is full of social demands, with no change in the pace of work. Some jobs even get busier during the summer.  

Trying to do everything puts you on the express highway to burnout. Instead, be honest about the fact that you’ve reached your limit and cannot add one more thing to your plate. Most people will be gracious about your boundaries. Those who don’t do you the favor of expressing an important fact: Their needs matter more to them than your health. 

Make a “to-don’t” list. 

When making your to-do list, take a moment to consider whether each item needs to be done by you. For instance, can you delegate? Can you postpone a task to later? Can you make a task easier or less time-consuming?  

By focusing on how to simplify your to-do list, you gain a new perspective on your priorities and rebuild your energy reserves.

Reevaluate your career. 

Summer is a perfect time to think about where you are in your career and where you’d like to be. Spend some time thinking about the work you’d like to do and where you’re currently headed. This time will help you gain perspective and prioritize the uses of your energy, so you can achieve your most important goals without burning out.
