Envision the end (of the year).
Where do you want to be on this date in 2022? Which goals do you want to be closer to achieving? What does that progress look like?
By starting with a clear vision of your end goal, you can more easily work backwards to set interim goals that move you closer to your end of year vision.
Make each goal statement specific and clear.
It’s tempting to give yourself an “out” by making goals vague. Vague goals, however, can’t help you move forward in your career.
Instead, make each goal clear and specific. “Sell more” is a vague goal; “Increase the number of deals I close by 10% relative to 2020” is clear and specific. You’ll know how far you need to go to reach this goal, and you’ll know when it’s time to celebrate achievement.
Add metrics and a timeframe.
Quantitative measurements help sales and marketing teams stay on track in their jobs. They also help sales and marketing professionals track and fulfill their own personal and professional goals.
Numbers and deadlines, like “increase sales 10 percent by August 1, 2021,” give you a clear finish line and a timeframe. They provide a sense of urgency, but also a sense of accomplishment when completed.
